Château BEAUSÉJOUR BÉCOT 2020
In Saint-Émilion, Château Beau-Séjour Bécot occupies a remarkable terroir on the limestone plateau of Saint-Martin de Mazerat, in the immediate vicinity of the village. The estate has been managed by the Bécot family since 1969 and relies on a vineyard deeply marked by limestone, clays, and underground quarries that characterize this historic sector of the appellation. Merlot naturally forms the base of the blend, while Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon bring more freshness, structure, and complexity. Over the years, the estate has undertaken significant work on the soils, parcel selections, and maturity balances to favor a more precise and vertical expression of its terroir. The 2020 vintage, warm and early, required particular attention to preserve the fruit's energy and avoid any heaviness. The limestone soils played an essential role in maintaining freshness, giving the wine a deep but taut architecture. Beau-Séjour Bécot 2020 thus stands out for its beautiful density, a pronounced mineral framework, and particularly refined tannic finesse.
Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2020 blends 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot provides ample body, ripe black fruits, and a velvety texture, while Cabernet Franc adds more aromatic relief, freshness, and length. Cabernet Sauvignon plays a more discreet role but strengthens the structure and depth of the whole. The grapes are vinified parcel by parcel to preserve the personality of each terroir before composing the final blend. Extractions are conducted with precision to maintain the finesse of the tannic grain and aromatic brightness despite the vintage's natural concentration. The aging then supports the structure without seeking to mask the wine's limestone dimension. The 2020 still has a youthful architecture, but its balance between maturity, freshness, and depth gives it significant aging potential.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The nose opens on blackberry, black plum, and ripe cherry, accompanied by violet, licorice, and fine spices. With aeration, nuances of cocoa, blond tobacco, cedar, and a chalky touch gradually appear, enhancing the sensation of freshness. The palate is ample and silky, with ripe and precise tannins that structure the body without hardening it. Merlot brings depth and velvety texture, while Cabernet Franc maintains a beautiful tension and extends the tasting on a more floral and mineral framework. The finish is long, persistent, and fresh, on black fruits, spices, cocoa, and a subtle limestone dimension. Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 2020 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, duck breast, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
