Château BRANAIRE-DUCRU 2016
In Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Château Branaire-Ducru extends over one of the most representative gravel terroirs of the appellation. Fourth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate was long associated with Patrick Maroteaux, who acquired it in 1988 and undertook significant restructuring of the vineyard and facilities. The plots rest on deep Quaternary gravel mounds, particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon thanks to their excellent drainage and heat retention capacity. Merlot brings a fleshier expression, while Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc complete the blend with more spice and complexity. The proximity to the Gironde estuary also plays a moderating role and promotes slow and regular ripening. Branaire-Ducru traditionally seeks finesse and precision rather than demonstrative power, with a tannic touch often particularly elegant. The 2016 vintage offers a consummate illustration of this style, combining deep maturity, freshness, and remarkable fruit definition.
Château Branaire-Ducru 2016 blends 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine with a straight framework, precise black fruit, and a structure suited to long bottle aging. Merlot adds more volume and suppleness to the mid-palate, while Petit Verdot enhances depth and the spicy register. Cabernet Franc plays a more discreet role, bringing aromatic finesse and freshness. The different plots are vinified separately to respect their maturity and personality before composing the final blend. Aging in French oak barrels gradually refines the tannins without masking the terroir's identity. The 2016 currently possesses remarkable cohesion, but its structure and balance still allow for several decades of evolution.
The color retains a deep garnet hue with still strong ruby reflections. The bouquet opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, then develops nuances of violet, cedar, and graphite. Aeration gradually reveals blond tobacco, licorice, cocoa, and fine spicy notes that enrich the fruity register. The palate is distinguished by a precise attack and elegant material, structured by fine tannins whose grain has already noticeably softened. Cabernet Sauvignon provides length and persistent freshness, while Merlot brings just enough flesh to balance the structure. The finish is long and refined, on black fruits, spices, graphite, and a slight smoky nuance. Château Branaire-Ducru 2016 will accompany roasted rack of lamb, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or game birds.
