Formerly a camp ensuring the defense of the village of Saint-Émilion, Château Clos Fourtet is still today a historic monument entirely surrounded by walls. It has the particularity of having the most beautiful cellars of Saint-Emilion, buried in underground quarries. For many years, he produced wines below the potential of his terroir. However, thanks to the work of the Lurton family, the wines of Clos Fourtet have regained all their charm. The estate was bought by Philippe Cuvelier, former boss of the Guilbert paper group. The cru is being converted to biodynamics, and new mass selections have been undertaken under the aegis of Stéphane Derenoncourt. The grape variety, made up of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, offers a powerful and racy wine. Developing very flattering aromas of red fruits, Clos Fourtet wines are also full-bodied, fleshy, and have excellent aging potential.
