Niepoort & The Sadie Family - Cape Fortified 2008
Niepoort is located in the Douro Valley, in the north of Portugal. The estate has been an independent family business for over 150 years, where five generations have succeeded one another since its founding in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, a Dutch immigrant.
The Sadie Family is a family estate located in the Swartland region of South Africa. Before his career as a winemaker and after a period as a surfer, Eben Sadie traveled and worked in several wine regions of the world, including Germany, Austria, Italy, Oregon and Burgundy.
First launched in 2010, the 2008 Niepoort & Sadie Cape Fortified was the vision of two of the world's leading wine producers. It was produced from Swartland grapes under the direction of Dirk Niepoort, one of the main producers of Port. Sorting was done by hand and then the juice was extracted by barefoot stomping of the whole bunches in bins. After fermentation the grapes were fortified on the skins with five-year-old brandy spirits and then pressed in a vertical basket press. One of the most important aspects in the production of a fortified wine is to pick the grapes at the perfect moment and not over-ripe, as the retention of natural acidity is critical.
Grape varieties: Tinta Barocca, Grenache, Carignan, Pinotage
