Château CANON LA GAFFELIÈRE 1961
Château Canon La Gaffelière is located in Saint-Émilion, in Bordeaux. In 2012, it was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. Canon La Gaffelière began as two separate estates in the 19th century: Canon Boitard and La Gaffeliere Boitard. They were eventually combined, and bought by the Von Neipperg family in 1971. The current owner is Count Stephan von Neipperg. The vineyard spreads over 19.5 hectares on a mix of clay-limestone and clay-sand soils, with predominantly sandy topsoils. These characteristics are well-suited to the grape varieties planted: 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Now, the vineyard is certified in organic farming but not for this 1961 vintage.
Château Canon La Gaffelière is a blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Franc (40%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). At harvest, the grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented without crushing in temperature-controlled wooden vats. They are then aged in mostly new oak barrels (up to 80%) for 15 to 18 months.
