CANON Castle 1994
Château Canon is located in Saint-Emilion , in the Bordeaux wine region. It is classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé . Jacques Kanon bought the vineyard in 1760. He made his fortune as a privateer and was closely associated with Quebec. He sold the estate ten years later to the Fontemoing family, who kept it until 1857. The estate did not officially take the name of Château Canon until 1853. Canon was bought by the fashion giant Chanel in 1996, and the company undertook to renovate the cellars and vineyards with the aim of modernization. Much of the Cabernet Sauvignon has been uprooted in favor of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which are more suited to limestone and clay soils.
During the 1994 vintage , apart from a wet month of April, the spring was ideal and led to early flowering. The summer was hot and sunny until a deluge hit on September 7 and continued for the rest of the month. The only saving grace was that the conditions were too cool to encourage rot.
Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon
