Badenhorst Family Wines - Secateur Red - Syrah 2021
Badenhorst Family Wines is located in the Swartland region of South Africa . The vines are grown on 180 hectares in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property, located on the Kalmoesfontein farm, is owned by Hein and Adi Badenhorst , originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. After completing his studies in Elsenburg, Adi worked at Château Angélus in Bordeaux and with Alain Graillot in the northern Rhône in France and Wither Hills in New Zealand. He made stays in local wineries: Simonsig, Steenberg, Groote Post and 9 years as a winemaker at Domaine Rustenberg in Stellenbosch. In 2008, he bought 60 hectares of land in the Paardeberg with his cousin Hein. Today they proudly farm together, practice organic farming and make natural wines in the traditional way.
Secateurs Rouge is a blend of Shiraz (50%), Grenache (25%) and Cinsault (25%) . These vines are cultivated without irrigation on a granite soil. The harvest is harvested by hand, refrigerated overnight and then trodden in open concrete vats for a fermentation of around 2 weeks. The grapes are co-fermented for complete integration. The extraction is done by crushing the grapes twice a day. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to old barrels and concrete vats and left on the lees for 7 months .
