Spirits > Armagnac & Cognac > Armagnac
This Armagnac Ténarèze 1977 Hontambère, bottled by RAC Spirits, comes from Ugni Blanc vines planted on the typical clay-limestone slopes of the Ténarèze, in the heart of Gers. The Hontambère house works with a terroir eau-de-vie, traditionally distilled before a very long aging in Gascon oak barrels in cellars with controlled humidity, where time gradually refines the material. Selected by RAC Spirits, barrel #D10 was isolated for its rare balance between woody depth, noble dried fruit, and elegant rancio, in a style both classic and highly precise. The 1977 vintage, marked by slow and steady maturities, produces an eau-de-vie with a beautiful backbone, capable of supporting a quarter of a century or more of aging while retaining freshness and energy. The reduction to 49.8% was designed to preserve the intensity of the aromatic profile while offering a caressing and perfectly clear palate, without burn or harshness. On the nose, this Armagnac Ténarèze 1977 unfolds a deep aroma of prune, candied fruits, orange peel, and dried apricot, complemented by notes of walnut, dark honey, blond tobacco, and cocoa. Upon aeration, nuances of beeswax, precious wood, vanilla, black tea, and subtle rancio appear, recalling the long patina of time on the distillate. On the palate, the attack is ample and enveloping, with a velvety texture carried by the finesse of the natural strength that lets the fruit and spices express themselves. The mid-palate alternates between dried fruits, citrus zest, mild spices, licorice, and slightly balsamic notes, supported by a perfectly integrated woody framework. The finish stretches long on bitter cocoa, tobacco, vanilla, roasted hazelnut, and a return of orange zest, in a warm but never overwhelming persistence. This contemplative Armagnac is ideally enjoyed alone, in a suitable glass, after a meal or during a dedicated tasting moment, but it can also accompany a grand cru dark chocolate, a dried fruit dessert, or a beautiful caramelized tarte tatin. It will also pair well with a fine cigar, whose complexity will dialogue with the rancio and spices of the 1977. Due to its unique barrel character and very limited release, this RAC Spirits selection is aimed at enthusiasts and collectors seeking old Armagnacs that are identity-rich, rooted in their terroir and a long aging history. Clos des Millésimes Bordeaux highlights this Hontambère Ténarèze 1977 within a sharp selection of rare spirits, favoring characterful bottlings and houses capable of producing eaux-de-vie of great expression. This bottle naturally finds its place in a demanding cellar, alongside great Armagnac vintages and collectible spirits chosen for their authenticity and precision.

Hontambère - RAC Spirits - Armagnac Ténarèze - 1977 - Ugni Blanc - #D10 - 49.8%

This 1977 Hontambère Armagnac Ténarèze, selected by RAC Spirits, illustrates the timeless nobility of a very old vintage patiently aged in cask. Made exclusively from Ugni Blanc, it presents itself in a deep amber robe with copper reflections, betraying several decades of aging in wood. The initial nose is broad, subtly captivating, blending candied plum, orange peel, dried apricot, and date, supported by notes of beeswax and dark honey. Then come blond tobacco, sandalwood, black tea, and a fine touch of cocoa, outlining an elegant and perfectly integrated rancio. The Ténarèze signature manifests through an earthy, almost spicy depth, with accents of dry undergrowth and cigar leaf. From the first sniff, it is clear that this is an Armagnac for contemplation, meant to be savored slowly.

On the palate, lot #D10 unfolds with remarkable intensity, carried by its 49.8%, which appear superbly integrated. The attack, both straightforward and caressing, opens onto dried fruits, plum, Corinthian raisin, and orange zest, enveloped by a noble woodiness with hints of vanilla and seasoned oak. The mid-palate gains complexity with notes of lightly roasted coffee, brown caramel, walnut, nutmeg, and mild pepper that structure the aromatic palette. The texture, ample but never heavy, shows intact energy despite its age, supported by a discreet freshness that avoids any sensation of fatigue. The warmth of the alcohol remains controlled, allowing volume and depth to express themselves rather than brute strength. The finish is very long, flavorful, marked by precious wood, blond tobacco, roasted fruits, and a hint of licorice, which lingers in the mouth for many seconds.

This 1977 signed Hontambère and bottled by RAC Spirits is intended both for enthusiasts of characterful Armagnacs and lovers of exceptional fine spirits. It is ideally savored alone, in a suitable glass, after a few minutes of breathing that reveal additional layers of candied fruits, fine spices, and balsamic notes. It will pair well with intense dark chocolate, a dried fruit pastry, a delicate cigar, or a simple moment of silence, as its complexity invites meditation. Each sip tells the long passage of time, the slow exchange between eau-de-vie and wood, the progressive concentration of aromas, and the unique patina of a great vintage. The cask numbering and precise strength reinforce the dimension of a unique piece, reflecting a demanding choice rather than a standardized blend. It is a collectible Armagnac, vibrant and profound, that captures in the bottle a fragment of the history of the Gascon vineyard.
