Champagne Hélène Charbaut - La Charbauterie 2023
Located on the Premier Cru terroirs of the Marne Valley, Hélène Charbaut represents a new generation of female Champagne winemakers who reinvest family estates with a personal and contemporary vision. After several years in the wine world, she returned in 2020 to her father Guy Charbaut's lands, carefully selecting a few parcels located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val d’Or, and Bisseuil. Her approach is artisanal and committed, with particular attention to parcel vinification and the most accurate expression of the terroirs. The La Charbauterie cuvée is her interpretation of the Brut Non-Vintage, conceived as a signature of the estate and an entry point into her universe. Behind this name lies a desire to combine Champagne tradition and modern sensitivity, with a free and minimally interventionist reading of the wine. This cuvée thus reflects the emerging identity of a domain in full affirmation.
La Charbauterie 2023 is based on an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, offering a classic yet precise balance between structure, fruit, and freshness. It combines about two-thirds of the 2022 harvest with one-third of 2021, aiming to harmonize profiles and maintain stylistic continuity. Vinification is carried out in barrels, containers in which the base wines continue their aging for nine months, bringing texture and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit. The wine then benefits from about 18 months of aging on lees before being disgorged on November 15, 2024. True to a refined approach, this cuvée is offered as Brut Nature, without any dosage, to preserve the most direct reading possible of the wine. Information regarding the possible use of sulfur or the precise viticulture method is not explicitly communicated and would deserve confirmation for a comprehensive technical sheet.
On tasting, La Charbauterie 2023 stands out with a profile both balanced and dynamic, where the three grape varieties express themselves clearly. The nose may evoke white fruits, citrus, but also more gourmand notes of red fruits and a slight toasted touch linked to the wood aging. The palate offers a beautiful body, supported by a lively acidity that brings tension and length, while the fine bubbles elegantly accompany the whole. The absence of dosage accentuates the sensation of precision and uprightness, giving a champagne both frank and expressive. This cuvée pairs easily with varied cuisine, ranging from seafood to white meats, including vegetable or slightly spicy dishes. It will appeal to lovers of grower champagnes seeking a balance between blending tradition and a contemporary, unadorned approach.
