In Saint-Émilion, Château Barde-Haut occupies a vineyard of about fifteen hectares located on the heights of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, in a hillside environment particularly favorable to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Owned by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard and Philippe Garcin since 2000, the estate has undergone significant restructuring work aimed at enhancing parcel precision and the quality of vinifications. The clay-limestone soils are one of the major elements of its identity, bringing depth, freshness, and tension to naturally generous wines. Merlot largely dominates the vineyard and develops a broad texture here, while Cabernet Franc adds more aromatic relief and length. The contemporary winery, partially integrated into the landscape, allows precise work on the different parcels and limits unnecessary handling. The 2016 vintage benefits from a particularly favorable season in Saint-Émilion, with a dry summer followed by an ideal ripening period. Barde-Haut 2016 thus combines fruit richness, limestone freshness, and tannic structure in a deep yet remarkably balanced style.
Château Barde-Haut 2016 blends 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Merlot gives the wine its density, enveloping texture, and generous range of dark fruits, while Cabernet Franc brings a floral, spicy, and more vertical dimension. The grapes are harvested at maturity and carefully selected before vinifications are carried out parcel by parcel. Extractions are adapted to the quality of the skins and seeds to build a deep matter without hardening the tannins. Barrel aging then accompanies the natural concentration of the vintage and allows a gradual integration of the wood into the structure. The clay-limestone nature of the terroir plays a decisive role in balance, maintaining freshness that runs through the entire palate despite the fruit’s ripeness. After about ten years in bottle, the 2016 begins to gain complexity while still retaining a good capacity for evolution.
The color shows a deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The nose opens on blackberry, black plum, and ripe cherry, accompanied by violet, licorice, and fine spices. With aeration, nuances of cocoa, tobacco, cedar, and a mineral touch evoking chalk and graphite gradually appear. The palate is broad and velvety, with ripe tannins that provide depth without heaviness. Merlot brings a fleshy texture, while Cabernet Franc maintains momentum and extends the tasting on a fresher frame. The finish is persistent, blending dark fruits, spices, cocoa, and a subtle limestone dimension. Château Barde-Haut 2016 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, duck breast, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
