Château Chasse-Spleen 1998
Château Chasse-Spleen, a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, is one of the most iconic estates on Bordeaux's Left Bank. Its reputation is based on a terroir of deep gravel and clay, ideally located between Margaux and Saint-Julien, as well as on precise expertise passed down through the generations. The Chasse-Spleen style combines structure, aromatic intensity, and a classic Médoc style of great elegance.
The 1998 vintage perfectly embodies this signature. Marked by a hot and dry season, it produced dense, ripe, and perfectly balanced wines. The blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot, was aged in oak barrels for approximately twelve months, including a significant proportion of new wood, enhancing the aromatic complexity without altering the finesse.
The nose, beautifully mature, opens with notes of blackcurrant, plum, and truffle, blended with hints of blond tobacco, leather, and cedar. On the palate, the texture is velvety, the tannins, aged by time, offer a harmonious suppleness. The heart of the wine remains lively and precise, carried by a beautiful freshness that prolongs the tasting. The finish, long and refined, expresses aromas of candied black fruits, sweet spices, and noble wood.
A great Chasse-Spleen at maturity, perfect today, which will ideally accompany a rack of roast lamb, duck breast or game birds. Serve between 17 and 18°C, after a slight decantation.
