Château HAUT-BAILLY - HB 2023
In Léognan, at the heart of Pessac-Léognan, HB is the third wine of Château Haut-Bailly and clearly distinguishes itself from the Grand Vin as well as Haut-Bailly II. It is made from the youngest vines on the estate, with the ambition to offer a more immediate and accessible expression of the Haut-Bailly universe while maintaining the precision that characterizes the domain. The vineyard rests on one of the highest gravelly ridges on the left bank of Bordeaux, on complex soils that promote drainage, deep rooting, and natural freshness. The estate, managed by Véronique Sanders and her team, places a central focus on parcel work and the selection of lots destined for each of its cuvées. The 2023 vintage was contrasting, with a warm spring, strong downy mildew pressure during June and July, then high temperatures from mid-August until the end of September. The harvest took place from September 11 to 29 in very good conditions, with particularly round Merlots and more classic Cabernets in their expression. HB 2023 reflects this year with a fruity, fresh, and immediately appealing profile, intended for earlier consumption than the estate's first two labels.
The 2023 Haut-Bailly HB blend is based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone of the wine, with expressions of blackcurrant, dark fruits, graphite, and spices, while the Merlot rounds out the structure and brings more suppleness to the mid-palate. This high proportion of Cabernet clearly distinguishes the cuvée by its energy and freshness, despite a deliberately accessible construction. The lots are selected after successive tastings that determine their destination between the Grand Vin, Haut-Bailly II, and HB. This hierarchy allows the estate to preserve a precise identity for each of the three cuvées while working from the same viticultural environment. HB 2023 shows a sufficiently structured body to evolve over a few years, but its balance favors fruit and more immediate pleasure rather than a long cellar wait. The vintage has an alcohol content of 14.5% vol., reflecting the generous ripeness achieved in 2023.
The color shows a deep garnet with ruby reflections still very young. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by notes of violet, graphite, and fine spices. With aeration, nuances of licorice, cedar, and ripe red fruits gradually appear, adding more depth to the bouquet. The palate is supple on the attack then gains structure thanks to the Cabernet Sauvignon, with precise but already accessible tannins. The Merlot brings volume and a rounder texture, while a persistent freshness maintains momentum through to the finish. The whole is distinguished by a balance between gourmandise, fruit clarity, and Médoc character, with a more direct approach than the Grand Vin. HB 2023 will accompany a grilled rib steak, a rack of lamb, duck breast, veal chop with mushrooms, or bistro-style cuisine around roasted meats.
