Château La Negly - La Porte du Ciel 2023
Château La Négly La Porte du Ciel 2023 is one of the most emblematic and spectacular cuvées of Languedoc. Located in Fleury-d’Aude, facing the Mediterranean, the estate benefits from an exceptional environment in the heart of the La Clape massif, between limestone, scrubland, sea winds, and the intense light of the South. Since being taken over by the Paux-Rosset family, La Négly has established itself as one of the major signatures of the region, with wines of character, powerful and deeply marked by their terroir. La Porte du Ciel holds a special place in this range, due to its ambition, concentration, and particularly careful aging. This prestigious cuvée expresses a very high vision of Mediterranean red, in an opulent, dense style designed for aging. The 2023 vintage confirms this sunny identity, with deep matter, great aromatic richness, and an impressive structure. It is a rare, intense, and iconic wine, intended for lovers of great Southern reds with strong personality.
The La Porte du Ciel 2023 cuvée is based on a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. Syrah brings depth, color, black fruits, violet, pepper, and a noble tannic structure. Grenache complements the whole with its flesh, roundness, generosity, and this smooth dimension that gives the wine its Mediterranean breadth. The grapes come from sandy-clay limestone and stony terroirs, which favor complete ripening while preserving a mineral framework. The harvest is done manually at optimal maturity, with a berry-by-berry sorting to keep only the most precise berries. After total destemming, the long 45-day maceration in tapered wooden vats allows extraction of deep, dense, and perfectly constructed matter. The 24-month aging in new 225 and 228-liter barrels gives the wine its patina, woody complexity, and aging potential.
In the glass, Château La Négly La Porte du Ciel 2023 reveals a dark, deep, and shiny robe, announcing a wine of great concentration. The nose combines black cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe black fruits with notes of cocoa, vanilla, blond tobacco, and precious wood. The palate is rich, dense, and smooth, with a creamy texture and perfectly assumed power. The tannins are ripe, enveloping, and structuring, giving the wine a very long and persistent finish. Despite its intensity, the whole retains a certain nobility of touch, carried by the depth of the fruit and the precision of the aging. This 2023 deserves good aeration if opened young, but it can also wait many years in the cellar to gain complexity. It will ideally accompany a hare stew, a matured rib of beef, noble game, a Languedoc-style stew, roasted pigeon, a truffled dish, or a matured cheese with character.
