In Courthézon, north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, Château de Beaucastel has belonged to the Perrin family since the beginning of the 20th century and is among the historic estates of southern Rhône. Its vineyard rests on soils mixing rolled pebbles, clays, sands, and limestones, in an environment swept by the mistral and particularly favorable to long ripening. Beaucastel has stood out for several generations by the important place given to mourvèdre, a demanding grape variety that finds here enough warmth to reach full maturity. Tribute to Jacques Perrin, created at the end of the 1980s in memory of Jacques Perrin, father of Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, constitutes the rarest and most ambitious selection of the estate. Produced only when the vintage conditions allow, this cuvée comes notably from very old vines and puts mourvèdre in the foreground. The old organic management of the vineyard contributes to a philosophy centered on soil vitality and terroir expression. The 2005 vintage, remarkable in the southern Rhône, offers here a combination of concentration, structure, and freshness particularly favorable to very long aging.
Tribute to Jacques Perrin 2005 blends 60% mourvèdre, 20% grenache, 10% syrah, and 10% counoise. This unusual predominance of mourvèdre gives the wine a deep architecture, with tight tannins, great aromatic intensity, and exceptional aging potential. Grenache brings more volume and fruit, while syrah strengthens the color and spicy register. Counoise plays a complementary role by bringing freshness and liveliness to the blend. The grapes are selected with particular care, then vinified separately to respect the characteristics of each variety before the final blend. The aging accompanies the natural density of the wine without seeking a dominant woody imprint, in accordance with Beaucastel's historic style. After more than twenty years in bottle, the 2005 retains an impressive structure while gradually entering a phase where tertiary nuances enrich the initial power.
The color remains very deep, a dark garnet whose edges begin to reveal fine evolved nuances. The nose develops blackberry, black plum, and blackcurrant, soon joined by black olive, pepper, Mediterranean herbs, and fine leather. Aeration reveals notes of truffle, smoked meat, licorice, and warm earth, characteristic of mourvèdre's evolution. The palate is dense and broad, but the matter retains remarkable freshness that avoids any heaviness despite the vintage's power. The tannins have gradually softened while maintaining a firm structure, giving the wine a sensation of depth and considerable persistence. The finish stretches over black fruits, spices, garrigue, and smoky and balsamic nuances, with a complexity called to continue its development. Tribute to Jacques Perrin 2005 will accompany a royal hare, roasted pigeon, herb-crusted rack of lamb, stewed game, or cuisine around black truffle.
