Domaine de la Bergerie de l'Arcade 2023
La Bergerie de l’Arcade is one of the most confidential and sought-after estates in today's Languedoc. Located in Pouzols, near Aniane, Pascal and Gilles Soulas have built a discreet, almost secret address, quickly followed by lovers of great wines from the South. Their journey is inseparable from the figure of Laurent Vaillé, the great winemaker of La Grange des Pères, who guided them in their approach to the vine and wine. This spiritual lineage does not make La Bergerie de l’Arcade a copy, but places the estate in the same quest for rigor, patience, and depth. The vineyards, worked on a small scale, produce a very limited quantity, making each vintage difficult to obtain. The 2023 red confirms the status of a rare, sought-after cuvée, already eagerly awaited by enthusiasts. It is an allocation bottle, for aging and fine dining, embodying one of the most refined expressions of contemporary Languedoc.
The La Bergerie de l’Arcade Rouge 2023 cuvée is based on a blend of 35% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, and 5% Carignan. Syrah brings aromatic depth, black fruits, violet, pepper, and an elegant structure. Grenache adds fleshiness, indulgence, and a sunnier dimension, while Mourvèdre reinforces firmness, complexity, and aging potential. Carignan, in small proportion, adds relief, freshness, and a wilder Mediterranean touch. The clay-limestone soils of the area preserve the balance between ripeness, density, and freshness, in a style that is deep but never heavy. Each grape variety is worked with precision before a long aging of about 24 months in barrels, which refines the material and gives the wine its noble texture. The 2023 vintage delivers an intense, structured, and very promising expression, faithful to the spirit of great Languedoc red wines for aging.
Domaine de la Bergerie de l’Arcade 2023 reveals a dark, deep, and shiny robe, announcing a wine of beautiful concentration. The nose opens on black cherry, blackberry, plum, blackcurrant, and ripe black fruits, with nuances of spices, licorice, garrigue, and pepper. The palate is ample, juicy, and caressing, supported by fine tannins and perfectly shaped material. The wine has the generosity of the South but with an elegant touch that avoids any heaviness. The finish is long, spicy, slightly smoky, with beautiful mineral energy and remarkable persistence. This 2023 deserves a few years in the cellar to gain complexity, but it can already be tasted after long aeration at a generous table. It will ideally accompany a rack of lamb, a matured rib steak, roasted pigeon, Languedoc stew, lamb tagine, feathered game, or a matured cheese.
