Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier - Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 2023
Located at Château de Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Jacques Frédéric Mugnier has established itself as one of the leading names in the Côte de Nuits through its remarkably clear interpretation of the terroirs. In Premeaux-Prissey, south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Clos de la Maréchale is a historic monopole. This vast walled vineyard, situated on outcropping limestone, produces wines where the inherent structure of Nuits meets a singular floral grace. The vineyard is cultivated with a constant focus on purity and balance in order to preserve the expression of the terroir.
Clos de la Maréchale 2023 is a red wine made exclusively from vines within the monopole. The grapes are harvested at precise ripeness and then carefully sorted. The harvest is mostly destemmed and undergoes spontaneous fermentation with measured extractions to preserve a silky mouthfeel. Aging takes place in lightly toasted oak barrels with a controlled proportion of new oak to add depth without masking the fruit. The 2023 vintage, generous yet restrained, highlights the depth of the Clos and a savory freshness that elongates the structure.
The nose opens with aromas of raspberry, Morello cherry, and blackberry, joined by peony petals and a hint of licorice. Aeration reveals notes of graphite, blond tobacco, and orange peel, adding complexity. On the palate, the attack is direct, then the texture unfolds with a very fine, chalky grain. The mid-palate blends juicy red and black fruits, framed by tightly structured, silky tannins. The finish is long, fresh, and mouthwatering, carried by a resonance of sweet spices, cherry pit, and a subtle smoky note that is characteristic of the terroir.
At the table, this premier cru pairs well with pink veal fillet, pigeon with chanterelles, free-range poultry with herbs, or black truffle risotto. It also complements grilled beef, glazed root vegetables, and soft, bloomy-rind cheeses such as a mature Brie de Meaux, which respects its delicate character.
