Hampden 2021 LFCH Fundador Single Cask A 62.80% - Mise Velier
Founded in 1753 in the heart of Trelawny, Hampden Estate embodies the Jamaican tradition of long-fermented pot still rums, where complexity is primarily developed in the vat. The distillery produces several historic "marks" classified by ester levels, an aromatic signature measured in g/hL AA, which Velier highlights through reference bottlings. The LFCH mark, made from molasses with extended fermentation, belongs to the house's most ethereal range, ideal for precise aging without masking the Hampden identity.
This 2021 vintage edition comes from a single cask that previously held Jerez wines at Bodegas Fundador, selected from an experimental series of ex-sherry casks and then aged for four years entirely in a tropical climate at the distillery. The "Velier" bottling at cask strength of 62.8% ABV gives the spirit an uncompromising character, while the LFCH profile gains prominence thanks to notes inherited from the Andalusian oak. Single cask A. Limited quantities.
The nose opens with roasted pineapple, flambéed banana, and orange peel, joined by a touch of walnut and almond carried by the sherry cask. With aeration, cocoa, red fruit paste, and a subtle pastry note emerge, framing the Jamaican exuberance. The palate is dense and vibrant, taut from the natural alcohol content, with a core of ripe tropical fruit, salty toffee, and sweet spices. The oily texture remains clean and light. The very long finish unfolds with delicate molasses, bitter zest, nuts, and a hint of dry rancio, a reminder of the sherry cask aging.
At the table or at the end of a meal, serve it neat after a few minutes of resting in the glass. It pairs perfectly with a mature cheddar or a 24-month Comté cheese, a lightly sweetened chocolate fondant, a walnut tart, an orange cake with olive oil, or even a medium-bodied cigar to prolong the spices.
