Armagnac Laterrade - Bas-Armagnac - 1986 - Domaine de Marquet - Cask Strength - 43.9%
The Laterrade house explores Gascony as a conservatory of terroirs, vintages, and family know-how. A trained sommelier, Vincent Laterrade built his collection by rediscovering old casks whose provenance could be precisely established, sometimes after several decades spent in the estates. Each vintage eau-de-vie remains associated with its original estate, without blending with another year, so that its history remains perfectly clear. The Domaine de Marquet is located in Castandet, in the Landes, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac. This western sector of the appellation, marked by oceanic influence and predominantly sandy soils, is particularly sought after for the finesse and fruity character of its eaux-de-vie. The aging here develops less a massive power than a progressive depth, where suppleness retains an essential role. By selecting this lot at its natural strength, Laterrade thus favors the relief of the vintage and the personality of the cask rather than a corrected or standardized profile.
Exclusively from the 1986 harvest, this Armagnac was distilled at Domaine de Marquet before aging thirty-nine years in French oak barrels. Such a duration allows time to transform the material without haste, through a succession of discreet exchanges between the eau-de-vie, the wood, and the atmosphere of the cellar. The initial fruit gradually concentrated, while the alcoholic structure gained smoothness and nuances of spices, dried fruits, and rancio developed. Natural evaporation brought the cask to 43.9%, the strength at which it was bottled without reduction. This strength retains more momentum than old Armagnacs naturally lowered around 40%, while remaining sufficiently measured to reveal aromatic details. Bottling without coloring or artifice respects the hue and texture acquired during aging. The 1986 vintage thus presents itself in an accomplished register, still animated by fruit but already deeply marked by the patina of time.
The color offers a deep amber with reflections of red copper and light mahogany. The nose opens on ripe plum, dried fig, and orange marmalade, then evolves towards fresh walnut, wax, and blond tobacco. After a few minutes, notes of cocoa, cinnamon, mild coffee, and sandalwood appear with greater precision. The palate has a broad but controlled attack, carried by a supple texture that the 43.9% keeps in tension. Stewed fruits join roasted almond, brown spices, and a slight touch of licorice, without the woodiness taking over. The finish, persistent and slightly dry, returns to citrus zest, walnut, and a delicate rancio. This Bas-Armagnac will naturally find its place at the end of a meal, alone in a tulip glass, or alongside a walnut tart, a lightly sweetened dark chocolate dessert, duck breast with figs, or an aged Comté cheese.
