Scarzello - Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2022
Scarzello is one of those family estates in Barolo that charm by their discretion, consistency, and deep attachment to Piedmontese tradition. Located in the heart of the village of Barolo, the family works a small vineyard of about five hectares, with a significant presence in the Sarmassa and Terlo areas. Since Federico Scarzello took on viticultural and oenological responsibilities, the estate has gained recognition among lovers of classic, precise, and sincere Barolo. Here, nothing is showy: the style relies on long time, patience, extended macerations, and aging in large oak barrels. The Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2022 perfectly expresses this philosophy, with a blend reading from several plots in the commune. This cuvée aims to be more accessible than the estate's single-vineyard selections, while maintaining the serious, floral, and tannic identity of Nebbiolo. It is a Barolo of balance, tradition, and finesse, ideal for discovering the Scarzello universe without giving up the depth of the terroir.
The Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2022 cuvée is made exclusively from Nebbiolo, the noble and essential grape variety of the great reds of the Langhe. The grapes come from Sarmassa and Terlo, two complementary sectors that bring structure, fruit, energy, and tannic finesse to the wine. The limestone and clay soils, with a small sandy component on Terlo, favor an elegant expression of Nebbiolo, less massive than some more austere Barolos but always well anchored in its origin. The harvest is done manually, generally between late September and the first half of October, to pick grapes at full phenolic maturity. The vinification follows a traditional approach, with long maceration on the skins, delicate extractions, and fermentation designed to preserve the natural complexity of the grape variety. Aging continues for 24 months in large oak containers, then the wine rests for a long time in the bottle before marketing. In the 2022 vintage, marked by a warm and dry climate in the Langhe, this Barolo gains immediacy, with open fruit, accessible tannins, and beautiful mouth energy.
In the glass, Scarzello Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2022 reveals a light ruby color, slightly garnet, faithful to the natural elegance of Nebbiolo. The nose opens on red cherry, raspberry, dried rose, and violet, with nuances of licorice, sweet spices, blond tobacco, and undergrowth. The palate is straight, fine, and already expressive, carried by lively acidity and present but delicately worked tannins. The balance relies more on precision and length than on power, which makes the wine particularly readable in its youth. The finish extends the red fruit, floral notes, and a typical earthy touch of great Barolo Nebbiolos. This Barolo will ideally accompany tajarin with ragù, mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, braised veal, herb lamb, or aged cheese. Serve around 16 to 18°C, after aeration in a decanter, or keep for a few years to allow the tannins to gain even more velvet.
