Porto Hutcheson - Vintage Port 1963
Hutcheson is a brand of Port produced by Sogevinus, a holding company of wine and Port producers based in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal . The company was founded in 1881 by British wine merchant Thomas Page Hutcheson and Alexander Davidson Taylor, a descendant of the Taylor's Port family. In 1920, Thomas Hutcheson retired - and his new partner became Augustus G. Bouttwood. In 1925, Taylor died and Bouttwood sold the house in 1927 to the Barros family.
Vintage Ports are aged for a maximum of 3 years in large, old wooden containers before further aging in the bottle. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration, which results in a significant deposit of sediment when opening and pouring. The 1963 vintage in Porto was exceptionally good . Unlike much of France and other neighboring European countries, the growing season was superb. The winter was cold, as in the rest of Europe, but a warm summer allowed both good vine growth and helped push the grapes towards full phenolic maturity. September then brought soothing rains while cool nights also helped preserve the acidity and aromatic character of the grapes.
Grape varieties: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional
