Champagne Hélène Charbaut - La Charbauterie - Magnum 2023
Located on the Premier Cru terroirs of the Marne Valley, Hélène Charbaut represents a new generation of female Champagne winemakers who reinvest the family heritage with a precise and contemporary vision. After several years of experience in the wine world, she returned in 2020 to work on the plots of her father Guy Charbaut, located in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val d’Or, and Bisseuil. She rigorously selects part of this vineyard to produce her own cuvées, with an artisanal approach focused on the expression of the terroirs and natural balances. La Charbauterie is her interpretation of the Brut Non-Vintage, conceived as an identity and structuring cuvée in her range. Offered here in magnum, it benefits from a format particularly suited to aging, allowing slower evolution and increased complexity. This large format enhances the gastronomic dimension and the aging potential of the cuvée, while offering a broader and more harmonious tasting experience.
The 2023 La Charbauterie is based on an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, mostly from the 2022 harvest complemented by about one-third from 2021. The vinification is carried out in barrels, where the base wines are aged for nine months to bring texture and depth. The wine then continues its aging on lees for nearly 18 months before disgorgement took place on November 15, 2024. True to an unadorned approach, this cuvée is offered as Brut Nature, without any dosage, allowing a pure and direct reading of the wine. The magnum format further accentuates this precision, promoting a finer integration of elements and better aging stability. Information regarding sulfur levels or exact viticulture methods is not clearly documented and would deserve confirmation for a fully exhaustive sheet.
On tasting, the magnum of La Charbauterie 2023 reveals an expression even more composed and harmonious than the standard bottle. The nose opens with notes of white fruits, citrus, and delicate red fruits, accompanied by slightly toasted and spicy nuances from barrel aging. The palate is distinguished by its balance, with ample body, fine bubbles, and well-controlled tension that brings freshness and length. The absence of dosage highlights the precision and purity of the wine, while the magnum format enhances the sensation of depth and complexity. This champagne fully expresses itself at the table, pairing well with noble fish as well as poultry or more elaborate gastronomic cuisine. It will particularly appeal to enthusiasts seeking grower champagnes capable of combining frankness, elegance, and aging potential. For your information, each magnum has a label with a different color.
