Château LARMANDE - Magnum 2005
In Saint-Émilion, Château Larmande belongs to the historic properties of the appellation and benefits from a vineyard located north of the medieval town, on a set of terroirs mixing clay, limestone, sand, and more siliceous areas. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, the estate builds its identity around a strong presence of Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This diversity of soils allows combining depth of matter, freshness, and aromatic finesse, three qualities particularly interesting in great aging vintages. The 2005 vintage is among the major years of the early 21st century in Bordeaux, with a dry and regular season that favored complete ripeness and particularly accomplished tannins. On the right bank, Merlots reached a beautiful richness while retaining enough freshness to build deep and lasting wines. Château Larmande 2005 fits into this register with a generous structure, now largely softened by nearly two decades of evolution. The magnum format further enhances the interest of the vintage by slowing its evolution and preserving the fruit, freshness, and aromatic cohesion longer.
The blend is based on a majority of Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot brings a broad and velvety body, with nuances of black plum, ripe cherry, and dark fruits, while Cabernet Franc provides more freshness, floral relief, and spices. Cabernet Sauvignon complements to strengthen the structure and prolong the finish. The different components are vinified in a way to preserve the natural richness of 2005 without producing excessive extraction, in order to maintain the finesse of the tannic framework. Barrel aging then accompanies the matter and promotes the progressive integration of fruit, wood, and spices. The intrinsic quality of the vintage has given the wine sufficient reserve to cross the years with great stability. In magnum, this evolution is even slower, allowing today to find a mature wine but often fresher and livelier than in a standard bottle.
The color shows a deep garnet evolving towards ruby and slightly tawny nuances. The nose combines ripe plum, blackcurrant, and black cherry with notes of cedar, licorice, and blond tobacco. With aeration, fine leather, undergrowth, cocoa, sweet spices, and delicate truffle nuances gradually appear. The palate is ample and harmonious, with tannins now largely melted but still sufficiently present to structure the tasting. The ripe fruit retains a beautiful density, supported by freshness that gives length and avoids any sensation of heaviness. The finish extends on evolved black fruits, tobacco, spices, and earthy nuances, with a particularly interesting persistence in this format. Château Larmande 2005 in magnum will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, game birds, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
