Domaine de Villaine - Côte Chalonnaise - La Digoine 2024
The Domaine A. & P. de Villaine, located in Bouzeron, the first village of the Côte Chalonnaise south of Beaune, is one of the major estates of southern Burgundy. Founded by Aubert and Pamela de Villaine, then managed by Pierre de Benoist, it has built itself around demanding organic viticulture, practiced since 1986 and certified since 1997. The La Digoine 2024 cuvée comes from a lieu-dit formerly renowned for the quality of its red wines, located at the foot of the slope, where deeper soils favor a fleshy and structured expression of Pinot Noir. The estate has planted selections of fine Pinot Noir there, sought after for their aromatic delicacy and moderate yields. Deeper and more structured than La Fortune, La Digoine represents one of the estate's emblematic reds. It embodies a terroir-driven Burgundy, both accessible in its youth and capable of evolving with elegance.
The 2024 vintage gives La Digoine an expressive but not excessive profile, faithful to the balance sought by the estate. The nose is discreet and refined, with expressions of blackcurrant, crushed strawberry, cherry, and ripe small red fruits. Nuances of spices, noble vegetal freshness, and delicate smoke add complexity without masking the fruit. On the palate, the wine has a supple and dynamic flesh, supported by silky and well-integrated tannins. The body appears more concentrated than that of La Fortune but retains fine elegance and great drinkability. The finish, fresh, elegant, and slightly spicy, prolongs this impression of precise, deep, and digestible Pinot Noir.
Served around 15 to 16°C, La Digoine 2024 will ideally accompany roasted poultry, veal quasi, pork tenderloin, pâté en croûte, sautéed mushrooms, or aged but mild cheeses. Its structure also allows it to pair with more gastronomic dishes, notably white meats in light sauces or delicate Burgundian cuisine. Already charming with its fruit and texture, it will nevertheless benefit from a few years of aging so that its tannins fully integrate. Its aging potential is superior to that of La Fortune, with an expected evolution towards more complex notes of black fruits, sweet spices, undergrowth, and fine smoke. La Digoine 2024 perfectly illustrates the style of Domaine de Villaine: a sincere, balanced, deep Pinot Noir deeply rooted in its place. It is a reference cuvée in Côte Chalonnaise, ideal for lovers of fine, digestible Burgundy reds capable of aging.
