Domaine Sérol - Granite Shine 2024
Located in Renaison, on the eastern foothills of the Massif Central, Domaine Sérol is one of the major references of the Côte Roannaise. The family origins of the estate date back to the 18th century, but its contemporary influence owes much to Robert Sérol, then Carine and Stéphane Sérol, who deepened the understanding of the granite slopes of the region. The vineyard is set in a high-altitude landscape mixing vines, meadows, and forests, where biodiversity plays an essential role. The Gamay Saint-Romain, a local variant of Gamay, finds here particularly favorable conditions for a fresh, floral, and spicy expression. The vines are managed organically and biodynamically, with careful soil work and a constant desire to preserve the natural balance of the plots. The estate seeks precise, slender, and digestible wines, without excessive extraction or aging that could mask the fruit. Granite Shine embodies one of the most immediate and readable expressions of this Roannaise identity.
This 2024 cuvée brings together several plots located on granite slopes between 400 and 530 meters altitude. The Gamay Saint-Romain is cultivated at high density, respecting the principles of organic and biodynamic farming. The harvest is done manually, in small crates, then the grapes are sorted before arriving in the vat. Part of the harvest is kept in whole clusters to bring aromatic relief and preserve the freshness of the fruit. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, followed by slow maceration in concrete vats. Aging also continues in concrete, a choice that preserves the frankness of Gamay and the mineral clarity of granite without introducing woody notes. The 2024 vintage stands out for a harmonious balance between maturity, energy, and lightness.
The color shows a bright garnet with violet reflections, with a measured depth that announces a wine more focused on brightness than concentration. The nose opens on raspberry, fresh cherry, and blackcurrant, then gains nuances of violet, white pepper, and wet stone. On the palate, the attack is soft and juicy, carried by a lively acidity that immediately gives relief to the fruit. The tannins remain fine, almost chalky, and accompany a fluid texture without ever hardening the whole. A touch of graphite, some spices, and a slight saline sensation extend the granite character of the cuvée. The finish, clean and thirst-quenching, returns to the tangy red fruits and pepper. Served slightly chilled, Granite Shine will accompany a charcuterie board, roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, a fish cooked on the plancha, or fresh cheeses.
