Gordon & MacPhail – The Speymalt from Macallan 20 Year Old 2004 – 1st Fill Sherry Hogshead, bottled at 58.90%, is a rare edition selected for the Itineraries collection. Founded in 1895 in Elgin, Gordon & MacPhail is a Scotch whisky institution, renowned for its expertise in selecting and maturing exceptional casks. For over a century, the house has maintained a historic connection with The Macallan Distillery, bottling some of its finest expressions under the name Speymalt from Macallan Distillery .
This single cask, distilled in 2004 and aged for twenty years in a first-fill sherry hogshead cask, embodies the quintessence of traditional Speyside: richness, depth, and a perfect balance between fruit and wood. Bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration, it expresses all the power and nobility of aging under the influence of sherry.
The nose opens with remarkable intensity: fig, date, prune, and cocoa, enriched with notes of leather, toasted hazelnut, and sweet tobacco. On the palate, the texture is dense and creamy, carried by a controlled warmth. Flavors of dark chocolate, orange peel, toffee, and fine spices unfold with amplitude. The finish, endless, combines dried fruits, elegant rancio, and a saline touch that underlines the purity of the Macallan distillate enhanced by sherry.
A sumptuous and concentrated collector's single malt, at the crossroads of the power of the cask and the finesse of Speyside, intended for slow and meditative tasting.
