Hampden - 8 years 2017 <>H Magnum Series - n°3 60% - Mise Velier
Founded in 1753 in Trelawny, Hampden Estate perpetuates the Jamaican tradition of long fermentations and pot still distillation, the foundation of rums with a unique aromatic intensity. The Magnum Series, launched by Velier, combines this expertise with the artistic vision of Magnum Photos. For this third installment, photographer Cristina de Middel has created visuals shot at the heart of the distillery, extending the complexity of the spirit into the images.
This 2017 vintage was aged for eight years entirely in a tropical climate, primarily in ex-bourbon barrels, before being bottled at 60% ABV in the spirit of cask strength. It bears the Hampden Diamond H mark, one of the high ester profiles, located around 900 to 1000 grams per hectoliter of pure alcohol at distillation. The result is a nuanced expression of the intense Jamaican character, framed by precise aging and the signature Velier style.
The nose opens with a profusion of ripe tropical fruits, roasted pineapple, and dried banana, edged with hints of fine varnish, resin, and green olive typical of high esters. Aeration reveals notes of candied citrus, cocoa, and a medicinal touch that enhances the sense of depth. On the palate, the attack is ample and taut thanks to the natural alcohol level, the oily texture remaining clean. The mid-palate blends roasted sugarcane, orange marmalade, and salty toffee with a savory energy that lengthens the finish. The finish is very long, dry, and vibrant, unfolding dry rancio, nuts, bitter zest, and a touch of smoke.
At the table or in the living room, serve it neat after a few minutes of rest in a tulip glass, or with a splash of water to adjust the intensity. It pairs perfectly with lacquered pork, lightly sweetened duck à l'orange, aged cheddar, or 24-month Comté. At the end of a meal, it complements a lightly sweetened chocolate fondant, a walnut tart, or roasted pineapple with spices.
