Marchesi Antinori - Solaia 2011
In the heart of Chianti Classico, Solaia is produced at the Tenuta Tignanello, the historic estate of the Antinori family located between the valleys of the Greve and the Pesa. The vineyard that gives it its name covers about twenty hectares facing southwest, between approximately 350 and 400 meters in altitude. Its stony soils, rich in alberese and galestro, ensure natural drainage and contribute to the depth and tension of the wine. Created in 1978, Solaia has gradually been built around a blend combining Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc. This meeting between Bordeaux grape varieties and the emblematic variety of Tuscany gives it an identity that is both international and deeply linked to its terroir. The 2011 vintage was marked by a hot season, with relatively early ripening and a significant concentration of grapes. In this sunny context, the altitude of the vineyard and the limestone nature of the soils played an essential role in preserving balance and freshness.
Solaia 2011 blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese, and 5% Cabernet Franc. The three grape varieties are harvested and vinified separately to adapt the extractions and duration of fermentations to their respective personalities. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the wine, with a deep structure and a profile dominated by black fruits and spices. Sangiovese brings more liveliness and tension that balances the natural richness of the vintage, while Cabernet Franc refines the whole with its floral and balsamic nuances. After fermentation, malolactic fermentation is carried out in barrels before prolonged aging in French oak. The different lots continue their maturation separately before the final blend and a new period of refinement. After fifteen years of evolution, the 2011 now combines still generous material with much more integrated tannins and increasing aromatic complexity.
The color shows a deep garnet with ruby reflections that begin to reveal the evolution of the vintage. The bouquet opens with blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, joined by notes of tobacco, cocoa, and sweet spices. Aeration reveals hints of cedar, fine leather, licorice, and Mediterranean herbs, accompanied by characteristic balsamic freshness. The palate remains ample and deep, with a silky texture supported by now perfectly integrated tannins. The ripe character of the fruit is balanced by the liveliness of the Sangiovese and a mineral framework that maintains length through the finish. The persistence combines black fruits, tobacco, bitter chocolate, and spices in a profile both mature and still energetic. Solaia 2011 will accompany a beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, game birds, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
