Planteray - Barbados Rum - 5 years - 40%
Planteray Rum, the new name for the range historically known as Plantation, is developed by Maison Ferrand under the direction of Alexandre Gabriel. This French house specializes in selecting rums from Caribbean distilleries, with particular attention to Barbados, a major territory in the history of rum. Planteray's approach is based on close collaboration with local producers, combined with aging expertise inspired by French spirits. Barbados is known for producing balanced rums, characterized by a certain roundness and accessible aromatic expression. In this spirit, Planteray highlights the specificities of each origin while maintaining its own stylistic signature. The Barbados range fits this desire to offer rums representative of their terroir of origin. This 5-year-old cuvée thus reflects the classic style of Barbadian rum, crafted with precision and coherence.
Planteray Barbados Rum 5 years is an aged rum made from sugar cane molasses, fermented and then distilled according to the island's traditional methods. Distillation is carried out both in pot stills and column stills, which allows obtaining a base that is both rich and structured. The rum benefits from initial aging in a tropical climate in Barbados, generally in American oak barrels that previously held bourbon. It is then transported to France for a second aging in French oak barrels that previously held cognac, according to Planteray's characteristic double maturation method. This process influences the texture and adds additional woody and spicy notes. The total aging period reaches five years here, combining the effects of tropical and continental climates. The final blend is made to ensure a consistent and balanced profile. This rum is bottled at 40% alcohol, in an accessible style faithful to its origin.
On the palate, Planteray Barbados 5 years presents a nose marked by aromas of vanilla, caramel, and ripe fruits, accompanied by woody nuances from barrel aging. Slightly spicy notes evoking cinnamon and nutmeg gradually appear. On the palate, the texture is smooth and balanced, with a soft attack supported by flavors of dried fruits and caramelized sugar. The influence of oak brings a light structure without dominating the whole. The profile remains harmonious, evolving towards more toasted and slightly spicy notes. The finish is moderate, marked by persistence on vanilla and light wood. This rum can be enjoyed neat to appreciate its balance, but it is also suitable for classic cocktails where a structured and versatile rum is sought, such as a Daiquiri or a revisited Old Fashioned.
