Born from the enthusiasm of three discerning enthusiasts, POH! Spirits is an independent French bottling house that selects exceptional casks from leading producers and then showcases them under its own label. The Savanna distillery, located on Réunion Island and renowned for its mastery of the entire production process, crafts molasses rums, Grand Arôme profiles, and agricole expressions, offering a unique aromatic playground for highly precise finishing.
This new edition arrives with a bang, featuring a 6-year-old from the Savanna distillery. This rum benefited from additional aging in a 1986 vintage Armagnac Sourdois cask, an old cask whose delicately pastry-like imprint underscores the rum's character. A touch of rich aroma was still present in the cask during the aging process... Bottling at 60.1% ABV preserves the integrity of the distillate and the dynamism of the finish, allowing for a clear expression of the marriage between the rum and the Gascon brandy. This batch, released in a very limited series, exemplifies POH! Spirits' philosophy of meticulous selection. A true favorite of ours and surely the best value for money for a Savanna!
The nose opens with aromas of dried fruit and brown sugar, then, with aeration, reveals notes of dark chocolate, almond, and puff pastry, a hallmark of Armagnac. A touch of freshness emerges, somewhere between citrus zest and ripe tropical fruit, adding depth to the molasses core. The palate, ample and energetic, unfolds a generous texture supported by the natural alcohol level, with a sweetness of brown sugar, notes of candied plum, and sweet spices that gain complexity with aeration. The finish is long, warm, and precise, blending bitter cocoa, nuts, a hint of rancio, and a mouthwatering return of orange peel.
Whether at the table or in the living room, this characterful rum pairs perfectly with a lightly sweetened chocolate fondant, a walnut tart, spiced roasted pineapple, or a slightly chilled blue cheese. It also complements a medium-bodied cigar, where the distillate's tension balances the woody sweetness of the wrapper.
