Quinta do Noval - Vintage Port 1991
Quinta do Noval, founded in the early 18th century in the Douro Valley, is one of Portugal's most iconic wineries. It is distinguished by its steep schist terraces, cultivated for centuries, and by its philosophy of authenticity: every step, from vine growing to bottling, takes place on the estate. Quinta do Noval's Port wines are characterized by their finesse, aromatic purity, and remarkable aging potential.
The 1991 Vintage Port is a legendary vintage, celebrated for its distinguished structure and exceptional balance. Sourced exclusively from the quinta's vines, it is the result of a strict selection of perfectly ripe grapes, still crushed in the traditional way in granite lagares. Fermentation, partially interrupted by the addition of wine brandy, gives this port its natural power and smoothness. After a short aging in barrels, the wine is bottled unfiltered for a slow maturation over several decades.
On the nose, it reveals a fascinating complexity: candied black fruits, cocoa, oriental spices, and a subtle hint of wild mint. On the palate, the texture is dense and silky, supported by a still lively tannic structure. The heart of the wine offers a masterful balance between natural sweetness and a persistent mineral freshness. The finish, long and deep, stretches on notes of dried plum, toasted hazelnut, and bitter chocolate.
Serve slightly chilled, between 16 and 18°C, after decanting for one hour to fully release its aromas. It pairs beautifully with blue cheese, a dark chocolate dessert, or simply enjoyed on its own at the end of a meal.
