The Sadie Family - Rotsbank 2024
The Sadie Family is today one of the most respected estates in South Africa, embodying the qualitative renaissance of the Cape vineyard under the impetus of Eben Sadie. Mainly located in the Swartland, the estate relies on a mosaic of carefully selected terroirs, worked with a rigorous parcel-by-parcel approach. The Rotsbank cuvée comes from Paardeberg, an emblematic granite mountain of the Swartland, known for its poor and very draining soils. The vineyard is planted with old Chenin Blanc vines, deeply rooted in decomposed granite, which gives the wine a very marked mineral identity. Cultivated without irrigation, these vines offer naturally low yields and great concentration. Rotsbank thus stands as a pure and precise expression of this granitic terroir.
The Chenin Blanc Rotsbank 2024 is characterized by a subtle and restrained aromatic profile, blending notes of fresh lemon, green apple, white flowers, and wet stone. The palate is straight, taut, and very precise, supported by a natural acidity that structures the whole without ever hardening it. The texture is fine, almost chiseled, with a persistent saline sensation that prolongs the tasting. The aging, deliberately discreet, accompanies the wine without ever masking the purity of the fruit or the reading of the soil. This refined style highlights energy and verticality rather than power. Rotsbank thus stands out for its finesse and transparency, faithful to the estate's philosophy.
The 2024 vintage confirms the aging potential and consistency of this cuvée, which gains complexity over time. At the table, Rotsbank pairs perfectly with delicate fish, seafood, or vegetable dishes with clear flavors. Its tension and length make it a gastronomic wine, but also a wine for discerning amateurs seeking precision and purity. Each tasting reveals a new facet of this granitic terroir of Paardeberg. Rotsbank is not a demonstrative Chenin, but a wine of detail and depth. An essential cuvée to understand the diversity and excellence of Swartland Chenins.
