Champagne Marguet - Ambonnay - Grand Cru 2020
The Champagne Marguet Ambonnay Grand Cru 2020 is the purest expression of Benoît Marguet’s work in this legendary village of the Montagne de Reims. Located in the heart of Ambonnay, he cultivates his vines biodynamically with rare precision, using draft horses, natural preparations, and meticulous observation of chalky soils and lunar cycles. The grand cru plots that make up this cuvée benefit from ideal exposures and old vines deeply rooted, offering grapes of remarkable concentration. The Marguet style is distinguished by an absolute pursuit of purity, a natural approach in the cellar, and a sincere expression of the place. The 2020 vintage, bright and generous, yields a dense yet highly energetic material, enhanced by the finesse inherent to the terroirs of Ambonnay. This cuvée thus embodies the estate’s signature: tension, depth, and aromatic brilliance.
The Champagne Marguet Ambonnay Grand Cru 2020 is made mostly from Pinot Noir complemented by Chardonnay, hand-harvested at perfect maturity to preserve balance and freshness. The vinification takes place in barrels or neutral containers, with indigenous yeasts and no unnecessary additives, in a spirit of total transparency. The wine is aged long on lees, which refines the structure, adds volume, and enriches the aromatic palette. The absence or near absence of dosage places the cuvée in an extra brut style, where the chalky straightness of Ambonnay is fully expressed. The rigor of vineyard work and precision in the cellar produce a deep, chiseled champagne, endowed with an energy very characteristic of the estate’s natural champagnes. This 2020 vintage stands out for its just maturity, ample texture, and remarkable verticality, faithful to the noble character of a grand cru from the Montagne de Reims.
On tasting, Ambonnay Grand Cru 2020 shows a bright golden robe animated by a fine and regular bubble. The nose reveals a complex aromatic profile blending yellow fruits, ripe citrus, white flowers, toasted bread, and a very marked chalky minerality. On the palate, the attack is lively and tense, followed by a broad mid-palate where lemony freshness, saline energy, and a beautiful depth of structure mingle. The Pinot Noir brings volume and flesh, while the Chardonnay imparts finesse, tension, and length. The finish is long, precise, vibrant, marked by notes of citrus, wet chalk, and an elegant salinity that signs the great terroirs of Ambonnay. At the table, this champagne pairs perfectly with scallop carpaccio, roasted turbot, free-range poultry with morels, sushi, or a lightly aged fresh cheese.
Grape varieties: approximately 80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay
