Château BRANE-CANTENAC 2016
In Cantenac, at the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Brane-Cantenac occupies one of the great gravel ridges that shape the identity of the most renowned crus in the area. A Second Growth classified in 1855, the estate owes part of its modern history to Baron Hector de Brane, nicknamed in the 19th century the "Napoleon of the Vines," who acquired the domain in 1833. Today managed by Henri Lurton, the vineyard benefits from precise parcel work aimed at preserving the finesse and aromatic definition characteristic of the cru. The deep gravels of the Brane terrace form the heart of the terroir and offer the Cabernet Sauvignon particularly favorable conditions for slow maturation. Merlot adds more flesh and suppleness, while Cabernet Franc and a small presence of Carmenère complete the complexity of the blend. The style of Brane-Cantenac historically favors elegance, freshness, and delicacy of mouthfeel rather than massive concentration. The 2016 vintage reflects this identity with remarkable precision, in a Bordeaux year that allowed the combination of complete ripeness, freshness, and great tannic quality.
Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenère. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon builds a straight and deep structure, with a particularly clear expression of blackcurrant, graphite, and spices. Merlot brings volume to the mid-palate and softens the structure without erasing the wine's natural tension. Cabernet Franc appears with more floral touches, while Carmenère, now very rare in Médoc, discreetly contributes to the aromatic uniqueness of the whole. The different parcels are vinified separately to adapt the extractions to the ripeness and personality of each lot. Aging in French oak barrels then supports the structure and gradually refines the tannins. After about ten years in bottle, the 2016 begins to gain complexity while retaining an important reserve of freshness and considerable aging potential.
The color shows a deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The nose develops on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, graphite, and cedar. With aeration, nuances of blond tobacco, licorice, cocoa, and fine spices gradually enrich the bouquet. The palate is distinguished by an elegant and precise texture, with fine tannins that structure the wine without producing an austere sensation. Cabernet Sauvignon impresses with remarkable length, while Merlot brings velvety flesh and additional balance to the mid-palate. The finish is persistent, fresh, and slightly mineral, on black fruits, dried flowers, spices, and graphite. Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, duck breast, or veal with morels.
