Château LA GAFFELIÈRE 2020
At the foot of the southern slope of Saint-Émilion, Château La Gaffelière benefits from a historic terroir where clay-limestone soils on the slopes meet sandier and gravelly areas below. Owned by the Malet Roquefort family for several centuries, the estate is among the longstanding references of the appellation and cultivates an identity based more on elegance than mere power. Merlot brings flesh and depth, while Cabernet Franc plays an important role in the vineyard's balance and strongly contributes to the aromatic freshness of the wines. The 2020 vintage benefited from a warm and early cycle, but the water reserves of the limestone soils allowed for maintaining a beautiful tension. This combination produces a concentrated wine without excess, built on ripe matter and very precise tannic grain. The 2020 Gaffelière stands out with an expression that is both deep, floral, and mineral, true to the personality of the area. Still young, it already possesses remarkable coherence between fruit richness, freshness, and length.
The 2020 vintage blend is based on 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. This high proportion of Cabernet Franc is one of the strong markers of the cru and gives the wine a more vertical, floral, and spicy dimension. Merlot builds the core of the palate with ample matter, ripe black fruits, and a velvety texture. Cabernet Franc extends the ensemble with notes of violet, graphite, spices, and fresher red fruits. The different lots are vinified separately to preserve the personality of the parcels before the final blend. The aging supports the structure with precision and aims to preserve the fruit's finesse rather than impose a dominant woody imprint. The 2020 thus has a dense but slender architecture, which should gain even more harmony over the years.
The color shows a deep garnet with strong ruby reflections. The nose combines blackberry, black cherry, and plum with notes of violet, licorice, and graphite. With aeration, cedar, fine spices, cocoa, and a chalky dimension gradually appear, recalling the limestone origin of the terroir. The palate is ample but precise, with fine and tight tannins that bring depth without harshness. Merlot gives a fleshy texture, while Cabernet Franc maintains remarkable freshness and stretches the finish. The latter extends on black fruits, flowers, spices, and a subtle mineral sensation. Château La Gaffelière 2020 will accompany roasted pigeon, a rack of lamb, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, veal with morels, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
