Château LARMANDE 2005
In Saint-Émilion, Château Larmande is among the historic estates of the appellation, with a vineyard located north of the medieval town on a mosaic of soils mixing clay, limestone, sand, and more siliceous areas. Classified as a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, the estate traditionally builds its identity around Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This diversity of soils brings depth, suppleness, and freshness, with particularly interesting balances in great vintages. The year 2005 is one of the major references of the early 21st century in Bordeaux, thanks to a dry and steady season that allowed perfectly ripe grapes and high-quality tannins. On the right bank, Merlot produced particularly fleshy and deep wines, while the Cabernets contributed to preserving structure and length. Château Larmande 2005 fully fits this profile, with generous matter and a framework now largely softened by time. After more than twenty years in bottle, the wine enters a phase of accomplished maturity where tertiary nuances gradually take over from primary fruit.
The blend is based on a majority of Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot brings a broad and velvety texture, dominated by black plum, ripe cherry, and dark fruits. Cabernet Franc introduces more freshness, floral relief, and spices, while Cabernet Sauvignon strengthens the overall structure and extends the finish. The natural richness of the 2005 vintage allows the wine to maintain beautiful density despite its evolution in bottle. The vinifications and barrel aging accompanied this matter by promoting the progressive integration of tannins and woody nuances. Over time, the structure has melted, and the aromatic expression has gained complexity, revealing more tobacco, undergrowth, and spicy notes. The wine still has enough freshness to remain harmonious and continue its evolution for a few years under good cellar conditions.
The color shows a deep garnet evolving gradually towards ruby and tile hues on the rim. The nose combines ripe plum, blackcurrant, and black cherry with notes of cedar, licorice, and blond tobacco. On aeration, fine leather, undergrowth, cocoa, sweet spices, and discreet truffle nuances appear. The palate is broad and supple, with now largely melted tannins giving the whole a harmonious texture. The black fruit remains present but naturally blends with tertiary notes, while persistent freshness maintains length. The finish extends on tobacco, spices, evolved black fruits, and a slight earthy dimension. Château Larmande 2005 will accompany roasted pigeon, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, rack of lamb, game birds, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
