Château LES CARMES HAUT-BRION 2015
In Pessac, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion holds a unique position within the Pessac-Léognan appellation, with a vineyard enclosed within the urban fabric of Bordeaux and a gravel terroir resting on clay-limestone subsoils. The estate, historically linked to the former Carmes convent, was acquired in 2010 by the Pichet group and has since undergone a profound transformation, both in the vineyard and in technical facilities. Under the direction of Guillaume Pouthier, the property has developed a very personal identity, based on a high proportion of Cabernet Franc and a constant pursuit of freshness, precision, and tannic finesse. This approach clearly distinguishes Les Carmes Haut-Brion from many other great reds of Pessac-Léognan. The warm and generous 2015 vintage allowed for ripe grapes while maintaining beautiful tension on the best terroirs. The wine's structure thus rests on a balance between fruit depth, energy, and floral expression. At this stage of its evolution, the 2015 is beginning to open up while retaining a still very youthful architecture.
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2015 blends 44% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, and 24% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc holds a central place here and brings a floral, spicy, and vertical dimension that is one of the estate's most characteristic markers. Merlot adds more flesh and smoothness, while Cabernet Sauvignon reinforces structure and persistence. The vinification notably features the use of a significant proportion of whole bunches, a technique that helps preserve freshness and complexify the aromatic profile. Extractions are carried out with precision to build deep material without hardening the tannic grain. The aging combines several containers to limit the wood imprint and promote the expression of fruit and terroir. The 2015 thus has a certain density, but its balance relies more on finesse and momentum than on sheer power.
The color shows a deep garnet with still strong ruby reflections. The nose combines blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry with notes of violet, graphite, and fine spices. With aeration, cedar, blond tobacco, licorice, and a discreet smoky dimension gradually appear. The palate is precise and energetic, with fine tannins structuring the material without any harshness. Cabernet Franc brings remarkable freshness and extends the wine on a floral and spicy register, while Merlot gives more volume to the mid-palate. The finish is long, fresh, and persistent, on black fruits, graphite, spices, and a slightly smoky touch. Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2015 will accompany roasted pigeon, a rack of lamb, beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, veal with morels, or refined cuisine centered around black truffle.
