Château TROPLONG MONDOT 2012
Located on the highest point of the Saint-Émilion plateau, Château Troplong Mondot benefits from a dominant position and a terroir where clay mixes with limestone. The estate has a long history, beginning in the 18th century before taking the name Troplong Mondot in the 19th century. In 2012, the estate was still managed by Christine Valette and Xavier Pariente, during a period marked by deep, concentrated wines built for aging. Merlot naturally holds a predominant place on these soils, where it develops a generous texture without losing the freshness brought by the limestone base. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc complete the blend and reinforce the structure as well as the aromatic complexity. Troplong Mondot was then among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion, a status acquired during the 2006 classification. The 2012 vintage fits into this stylistic period of the château with a rich, ample, and dense expression, balanced by the natural tension of the plateau.
Château Troplong Mondot 2012 is composed of 90% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The very high proportion of Merlot brings a generous texture, significant depth, and an aromatic profile dominated by ripe black fruits. Cabernet Sauvignon strengthens the framework and extends the palate, while Cabernet Franc adds an extra touch of freshness and finesse. Sourced from the clay-limestone terroirs of the plateau and the Mondot hill, the grapes give rise to a naturally structured wine with significant aging potential. The 2012 vintage is less sunny than some neighboring vintages, which helps maintain an interesting balance between fruit ripeness and tension. After more than a decade in bottle, its structure begins to soften while retaining enough density to continue evolving. The whole is currently at a particularly interesting stage, between the persistence of fruit and the gradual appearance of tertiary aromas.
The color retains a deep garnet hue, beginning to take on slightly evolved ruby nuances. The nose unfolds blackberry, black plum, and blackcurrant, accompanied by licorice, violet, and sweet spices. With aeration, notes of cocoa, tobacco, cedar, and undergrowth gradually appear, reflecting the vintage's evolution. The palate remains ample and fleshy, but the initially powerful tannins now gain in smoothness and integration. A fresh and slightly chalky framework adds relief to the richness of the Merlot and maintains beautiful precision through to the finish. The persistence combines black fruits, spices, cocoa, and mineral nuances in a deep and mature register. Château Troplong Mondot 2012 will accompany a beef filet with porcini mushrooms, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon, game birds, or cuisine featuring black truffle.
