Domaine Alain Graillot - La Guiraude - Magnum 2023
The Domaine Alain Graillot, located in Pont-de-l’Isère in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, is an absolute reference in the northern Rhône valley. Founded in 1985 by Alain Graillot, the estate has deeply marked the modern identity of the appellation with a demanding, straightforward, and unpretentious style. Today, his sons Maxime and Antoine Graillot continue this approach with the same rigor and an intimate knowledge of the family terroirs. The vineyard, about twenty hectares, rests on old alluvial soils, clay-limestone and stony, favorable to a structured and fresh Syrah. The vines are worked with low yields and systematic manual harvesting. The vinifications, carried out with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention, prioritize the expression of the vintage and the depth of the terroir.
The cuvée La Guiraude 2023, here offered in Magnum format, represents the pinnacle of the estate's range. It comes from old Syrah vines, selected from the finest plots, naturally offering concentration and complexity. This cuvée undergoes a more ambitious aging than the classic Crozes-Hermitage, in barrels, to gain depth and structure without ever losing precision. The 2023 vintage, marked by controlled ripeness, gives the wine remarkable aromatic intensity while maintaining a fresh and energetic framework. The Magnum format further enhances this harmony by promoting a slower and nobler evolution. It is a wine for aging, designed to gracefully withstand the test of time.
On tasting, La Guiraude reveals a deep nose blending ripe black fruits, violet, spices, and elegant smoky notes. The palate is ample, powerful, and structured, supported by dense but perfectly integrated tannins. The body is rich without heaviness, carried by a mineral freshness that balances the whole. The finish is long, persistent, marked by pepper, licorice, and a saline touch. This grand Crozes-Hermitage will ideally accompany noble meats, game, or slowly simmered dishes. It can also be cellared for several years to reveal all its complexity.
