Domaine de la Folie - Rully Blanc 1er Cru - Clos Saint-Jacques 2024
Domaine de la Folie is located in Rully, in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy, a region renowned for the finesse of its white wines made from Chardonnay. The family estate, whose history dates back to the 18th century, currently cultivates a vineyard situated around the domain's château and on several slopes of the appellation. The vineyard extends notably around Chagny and Rully, on predominantly clay-limestone soils typical of southern Burgundy, favorable to the precise expression of Chardonnay. The Rully appellation, created in 1939, is one of the great communal appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise and includes several climats classified as Premier Cru. Clos Saint-Jacques is one of the emblematic terroirs of the appellation and is entirely owned by the estate, making it a rare monopoly in Burgundy. Located on a well-exposed slope, this historic climat allows the production of wines reputed for their precision and freshness. The 2024 vintage continues this tradition by offering an elegant and balanced interpretation of the Rully terroir.
The Rully Blanc 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques 2024 is made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes from a plot of about 1.7 hectares planted on east-facing clay-limestone soils. The vines, some of which are several decades old, produce concentrated grapes that retain beautiful freshness thanks to the temperate climate of the Côte Chalonnaise. The harvest is done manually in small crates to preserve the integrity of the clusters and aromatic precision. After gentle pressing and careful settling, fermentation is conducted with precision to respect the fruit's identity. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, about twenty percent of which are new wood, which adds structure and complexity while preserving the purity of the Chardonnay. This approach aims to produce a balanced Premier Cru, combining depth, mineral tension, and aromatic finesse. The result is a wine that clearly expresses the personality of the Clos Saint-Jacques climat.
On tasting, this 2024 Rully 1er Cru reveals a delicate nose dominated by aromas of white flowers, acacia, and hawthorn, accompanied by notes of pear, apple, and white-fleshed fruits. Nuances of citrus, toasted almond, and sometimes hazelnut complete this aromatic bouquet and add complexity. The palate is ample and balanced, supported by precise acidity that enhances the wine's natural freshness. Orchard fruit flavors blend with a mineral framework characteristic of Rully's limestone soils. The balance between roundness and tension gives the wine an elegant structure and a beautiful length on the palate. The persistent and slightly saline finish prolongs the sensation of freshness and highlights the nobility of this Premier Cru. This wine pairs particularly well with shellfish, fish in sauce, creamy poultry dishes, or aged cheeses.
