Domaine Fumey Chatelain - Ploussard 2024
In Montigny-lès-Arsures, in the northern part of the Arbois vineyard, Domaine Fumey Chatelain explores the many facets of Jura grape varieties with a decidedly contemporary sensitivity. Raphaël Fumey and Adeline Chatelain founded the estate in the 1980s, before vinifying their first harvest after the devastating frost of 1991. Their son Marin joined the family venture after several experiences in the southern hemisphere, notably in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. His return accompanied an evolution in viticultural work and vinifications towards greater precision, freshness, and parcel-specific expression. The estate now extends between Montigny-lès-Arsures and Arbois, on a mosaic of marls and limestones particularly suited to the region's historic varieties. Among them, Ploussard holds a unique place for its delicate color, floral expression, and ability to convey soil nuances. This 2024 cuvée offers an airy, flavorful, and subtly earthy interpretation.
The 2024 Ploussard is made exclusively from old vines planted between 1952 and 1970 on marl terroirs of Jura. The grapes are hand-harvested to preserve the integrity of the berries and the natural finesse of the variety. Vinification relies on a maceration of about twenty days, conducted to extract aromas and structure without hardening the tannins. Ploussard indeed has a thin skin that requires particular attention during fermentation. The wine then ages for ten months, mainly in large oak vats, with a portion kept in stainless steel tanks. The use of large-capacity containers limits the wood influence and allows the fruit to remain at the forefront. The 2024 vintage thus retains a seemingly light body, supported by a spicy depth and a persistent mineral framework.
The color shows a translucent light red, crossed with ruby and slightly orange reflections. The nose opens on wild strawberry, redcurrant, and Morello cherry, accompanied by notes of dried rose and orange peel. With aeration appear white pepper, dry herbs, and a discreet note of undergrowth. The palate is supple from the attack, with delicate matter carried by fine tannins and a particularly salivating acidity. The tart red fruits evolve towards flavors of pomegranate, cranberry, and mild spices. The finish remains fresh and slender, with a slight earthy dimension that adds relief without weighing down the whole. Served slightly chilled, this Ploussard will accompany roasted poultry, Morteau sausage, mushroom dishes, pâté en croûte, or a lightly aged Comté cheese.
