Domaine Pierre Gonon - Saint Joseph Blanc - Les Oliviers 2022
The Domaine Pierre Gonon is located in Mauves, Ardèche, in the heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation in the northern Rhône valley. This family estate, taken over and developed by brothers Jean and Pierre Gonon, has established itself as one of the major references of the appellation thanks to a demanding approach faithful to the granitic terroirs. The vineyard extends over steep slopes overlooking the Rhône, where soils composed of decomposed granites and clays bring tension and depth to the wines. Viticulture is conducted organically with meticulous manual work, essential on these steep slopes. The estate favors controlled yields and a low-intervention approach in the cellar to preserve the identity of each cuvée. The estate's white wines, still relatively confidential, are among the most sought-after expressions of Saint-Joseph. The Les Oliviers 2022 cuvée follows this tradition by offering a precise and structured interpretation of the region's white wines.
The Saint-Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers 2022 is made from a traditional blend dominated by Marsanne, complemented by Roussanne, two emblematic grape varieties of the northern Rhône. The vines are planted on granitic soils mixed with clay, promoting both fruit richness and a beautiful natural freshness. The grapes are harvested at maturity to maintain a balance between concentration and tension. After careful pressing, fermentation takes place in oak barrels, followed by about eleven months of aging on fine lees in used containers. This method develops a broad texture while preserving the wine's aromatic precision. Malolactic fermentation is carried out to harmonize the whole and bring roundness. The 2022 vintage, marked by generous ripeness, produces a fuller wine while maintaining a fresh structure typical of granitic terroirs.
On the palate, Les Oliviers 2022 reveals an expressive nose blending aromas of white-fleshed fruits, pear, and quince, accompanied by notes of citrus, white flowers, and honey. The mouth is distinguished by a broad and enveloping texture, supported by well-integrated acidity that brings balance and length. Flavors evoke ripe lemon, yellow apple, and slightly spicy nuances that appear with aeration. The whole retains a beautiful freshness despite its richness, with a structure that gives the wine a character both generous and precise. The finish, long and persistent, extends on noble bitters and a slightly saline sensation. This Saint-Joseph white ideally accompanies scallops, fish in sauce, refined poultry, or gourmet dishes based on mushrooms.
