Château PONTET-CANET 2020
In Pauillac, Château Pontet-Canet extends over a vast terroir of deep gravel soils located opposite the Gironde estuary, in the immediate vicinity of several major crus of the appellation. Fifth Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate has belonged to the Tesseron family since 1975 and has distinguished itself by a profound questioning of conventional viticultural practices. Under the impetus of Alfred Tesseron, the vineyard has gradually adopted biodynamics, soil work, and an approach aimed at strengthening the vine's natural autonomy. The gravelly slopes rest on more clayey and limestone horizons, a combination that ensures both drainage and water reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon naturally forms the backbone of the wine, while Merlot brings more flesh and suppleness. The warm and early 2020 vintage required particularly precise observation of maturities to preserve freshness and balance. Pontet-Canet 2020 reflects this sunny year in a deep and energetic register, with generous matter carried by remarkable tannic finesse.
Château Pontet-Canet 2020 blends 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine its vertical structure, deep black fruit, and the graphite dimension characteristic of great Pauillacs. Merlot adds volume to the mid-palate and softens the framework, while Cabernet Franc enriches the expression with floral and spicy nuances. Petit Verdot contributes more depth, color, and tension. The vinification favors measured extractions to preserve the fruit's brightness and the finesse of the tannic grain despite the vintage's natural concentration. The aging combines different containers, notably wood and amphorae, to limit the aromatic imprint of aging and preserve the terroir's expression. Still very young, the 2020 has a dense but remarkably balanced architecture, designed to evolve over several decades.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still bright purple reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, accompanied by violet, graphite, and licorice. Aeration gradually reveals notes of cocoa, spices, fine tobacco, and a slightly floral dimension that adds relief to the bouquet. The palate is ample but fluid, with fine and tight tannins structuring the matter without causing hardness. Cabernet Sauvignon brings tension and length, while Merlot gives a fleshier and velvety texture to the mid-palate. The finish lingers long on black fruits, graphite, spices, and a persistent mineral sensation. Château Pontet-Canet 2020 will accompany a roasted rack of lamb, a beef fillet with cep mushrooms, pigeon, royal hare, or refined cuisine around black truffle.
