CHATEAU HAUT-BATAILLEY 1994
Château Haut-Batailley is located in Pauillac , Bordeaux . It is one of 18 Châteaux with Fifth Grand Cru Classé status, awarded by the 1855 classification. The Château was once part of the larger Château Batailley. It was purchased in 1932 by brothers François and Marcel Borie, who split it in two in 1942 to avoid succession disputes. François took the smaller property that did not include the physical castle and named the estate Haut-Batailley. He expands the estate by buying vineyards. Château Haut-Batailley now has 22 hectares of vines planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc blended in the final cuvée but planted in smaller proportions. Since 2017, the Château has belonged to the Cazes family , which has been firmly rooted in the Médoc landscape for several generations.
Le Grand Vin is a classic Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon . The harvest is manual, the aging takes place for about 18 months , entirely in barrels , the percentage of new barrels of which varies according to the vintage. The 1994 vintage in Bordeaux had a wet April, but the spring was ideal and led to early flowering. The summer was hot and sunny until a deluge hit on September 7, and continuing through the rest of the month, but conditions were too cool to encourage rot. Careful grape selection was crucial to avoid overly dilute berries.
