Château PAPE CLÉMENT 2019
In Pessac, at the gates of Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément belongs to the historic circle of the Grands Crus Classés of Graves and has one of the oldest trajectories in the Bordeaux vineyard. Its history dates back to the 13th century and remains associated with Bertrand de Goth, Archbishop of Bordeaux who became pope under the name Clement V. Today owned by Bernard Magrez, the estate relies on a vineyard where the gravel rests on clay horizons, offering the red grape varieties favorable conditions for complete ripening while maintaining a useful water reserve. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot form the base of the grape blend, complemented by small proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard management is based on precise parcel observation, with soil work, yield control, and manual harvesting. Pape Clément seeks a broad and deep expression of Pessac-Léognan, but whose richness remains structured by freshness and the smoky dimension traditionally associated with the graves. The 2019 vintage fits particularly well into this aesthetic, with ripe fruit, generous matter, and a structure energetic enough to support a long evolution.
Château Pape Clément 2019 blends 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The majority of Cabernet Sauvignon brings a more vertical architecture to the wine, while Merlot enhances the depth of the fruit and the mid-palate texture. The grapes are carefully selected before a parcel-based vinification aimed at adapting the extraction to the maturity of each lot. Fermentations are carried out in appropriately sized containers, with measured extraction work to build structure without hardening the tannins. Part of the malolactic fermentation and aging takes place in barrels, complemented by the use of larger volume containers. The aging of about sixteen months allows the wood to gradually integrate with the natural concentration of the vintage. The 2019 thus stands out for a dense matter but less demonstrative than it appears, supported by a freshness that gives length to the whole.
The color shows a very deep garnet with still strong purple reflections. The nose opens on blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry, before developing nuances of violet, graphite, and sweet spices. Aeration reveals cocoa, cedar, licorice, and a smoky touch that recalls the identity of the great terroirs of Pessac-Léognan. The palate is ample from the attack, but the richness of the fruit remains framed by a precise and progressively silky tannic structure. Cabernet Sauvignon brings tension and persistence, while Merlot envelops the palate with a fleshier and velvety texture. The finish, long and deep, returns to black fruits, graphite, spices, and a slight note of tobacco. Château Pape Clément 2019 will accompany a rib of beef, a roasted rack of lamb, pigeon with porcini mushrooms, a venison fillet, or cuisine based on black truffle.
