Domaine Berry-Althoff - Janis - Brut
Domaine Berry-Althoff is one of the most exciting young addresses in the Gard region, driven by Imogen Berry and Robin Althoff in Aubais, Languedoc. Their adventure began in 2015, after several winemaking experiences in California and South Africa, with the desire to create pure, precise wines deeply linked to their terroirs. The estate works its vines using organic and biodynamic farming, with an artisanal approach that favors the natural expression of the grapes and soils. Janis holds a very unique place in the range, as this sparkling rosé cuvée highlights a fresh, festive, and delicate facet of Grenache. Originating from a parcel of the estate located in Aubais, it expresses the Hauterivian limestones with a beautiful sensation of lightness and minerality. The vine, planted in 1983, brings discreet depth and a true quality of fruit. It is an artisanal, lively, and charming bubble, ideal for discovering the Berry-Althoff universe in a joyful and very accessible style.
The Janis Brut cuvée is made exclusively from Grenache, a Mediterranean grape variety often associated with sunny reds but here capable of producing a sparkling rosé of great indulgence. The grapes are hand-harvested to preserve the integrity of the clusters and the aromatic finesse of the fruit. After direct pressing, the wine is settled and then fermented at low temperature with indigenous yeasts. The ancestral method consists of bottling the wine while it still retains some fermentable sugars, here at 28 g/L residual sugar at the time of tirage. Fermentation then continues naturally in the bottle, creating the effervescence without the need for a classic second fermentation. After 9 months on the lees, the bottles are disgorged by hand and then recapped, in an artisanal and low-intervention spirit. With a very low total SO₂, this cuvée maintains a free, fresh, and immediate expression, faithful to the estate's philosophy.
In the glass, Domaine Berry-Althoff Janis Brut reveals a bright, lively rosé color, animated by a fine and energetic bubble. The nose opens with aromas of strawberry, cherry, fresh red berries, and a delicate floral touch. The palate is indulgent, light, and thirst-quenching, with a joyful effervescence that highlights the fruit without weighing down the tasting. The style remains brut, but the fruity sensation gives it much charm and accessibility. The finish returns to red fruits, with a clear freshness and a slight limestone tension that perfectly balances the whole. Janis will be perfect as an aperitif, with a platter of fine charcuterie, Mediterranean tapas, a tomato tart, a strawberry salad, or a red fruit dessert. Serve well chilled, around 8 to 10°C, to fully enjoy its brightness, indulgence, and spontaneity.
