Domaine Thibault Liger Belair - Côte de Nuits Villages - Au Leurey-Vine from 1937 2022
Thibault Liger-Belair is one of the most recognized winemakers of the contemporary Côte de Nuits, with a demanding, precise approach deeply attached to the terroirs. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, he took over the family estate in the early 2000s before developing a very personal interpretation of the great Burgundy climats. His work relies on organic farming, biodynamic practices, and a constant search for balance between maturity, energy, and finesse. The Au Leurey – Vine from 1937 cuvée belongs to the Thibault Liger-Belair Successors universe and holds a very interesting place in the range. Located south of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, this plot benefits from remarkable proximity to the premier crus Clos de la Maréchale and Clos de l'Arlot. It produces a Côte de Nuits-Villages of particularly ambitious level for its appellation. With the sunny and generous 2022 vintage in Burgundy, this wine expresses beautiful intensity while maintaining the limestone freshness typical of the place.
The Côte de Nuits-Villages Au Leurey – Vine from 1937 2022 cuvée is made exclusively from Pinot Noir. The vine, mostly planted in 1937, constitutes a precious vegetal heritage, capable of bringing depth, natural concentration, and aromatic complexity. The terroir is very shallow, with about 50 centimeters of soil before the bedrock, which enhances the mineral expression and tension of the wine. The southeast exposure favors regular ripening in this relatively early sector while preserving the brightness of the fruit. The harvest is done manually, with 40% whole clusters to bring freshness, relief, and a spicy dimension. Fermentation lasts about three weeks, with very gentle extractions to respect the Pinot Noir grain. The 18-month aging, including 30% in new barrels, supports the structure without masking the terroir's identity.
In the glass, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Côte de Nuits-Villages Au Leurey – Vine from 1937 2022 reveals a red that is both deep, vibrant, and very Burgundian. The nose opens on ripe red fruits, cherry, raspberry, and plum, with nuances of fine earth, mushroom, discreet mint, and spices. The palate is dense but supple, carried by fine tannins and beautiful limestone freshness. The 2022 vintage brings flesh, volume, and generous maturity, while the old vine gives depth and true persistence. The finish remains elegant, with a return to crunchy red fruit, soft spices, and a mineral note that lengthens the tasting. This Côte de Nuits-Villages can be enjoyed after a few years in the cellar, when the whole cluster and aging have gained harmony. It will perfectly accompany roasted poultry, veal with mushrooms, pork tenderloin, duck with soft spices, cep risotto, or an aged cheese.
